“Nature as Culture” is a visual exploration of the unique relationship maintained between the City of Austin and its natural environment. The title signifies the collective effort made by the city and its community to integrate conservation and preservation into their shared values and, ultimately, into their cultural identity.
As a visual artist, I set out to create a project imbued with a substantive commentary on the intersection between humanity and nature that is deeply ingrained in Austin’s culture. While each image contains evidence of human presence within the natural landscape, the work also communicates a deeper sense of this valued relationship, one that has been consciously nurtured and preserved for the benefit of all life.
Rather than framing humans as intrusions upon the landscape, this work emphasizes a sense of interconnection. It reflects on how we affect these precious green, blue, and earthen spaces, often in complex yet positive ways.
Through this exploration of aesthetic and formal relationships, the central aim of the project is to encourage viewers to think more deeply about their own connection to the natural world, not only how these two realms interact, but how delicately and profoundly intertwined they truly are.
While I hope to leave viewers with an appreciation for the raw beauty of these landscapes, I also aim to inspire a renewed desire to explore and protect them. Because I believe there is a certain nourishment for the human soul that only a deeper connection with nature can provide, and my images serve as a visual expression of this spiritual bond that we all require in our lives.
