“Nature as Culture” is a visual exploration illustrating the unique relationship maintained between the City of Austin and its natural environment.
The conservation and preservation of the local natural habitat has become one of Austin's communities most deeply held values and subsequently, part of its identity.
"Nature as Culture" began with the idea of creating a project that would be imbued with a more substantive commentary to be made about this intersection between man and nature that I found ingrained within the culture here in Austin, Texas.
While my images each contain evidence of the human presence among the natural environment, I also communicate a deeper sense of this highly valued relationship, one that has consciously been nurtured and preserved for the benefit of all life.
Through the visual exploration of various formal & aesthetic qualities, we experience a sense of an interconnection, as opposed to the human presence existing as an intrusion or encroaching on the landscape. We also reflect on how it is we do affect these precious green, blue, and earthen-colored spaces, yet often in unique and positive ways.
